Government still making no progress on dentists

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 21st May 2009

Commenting on statistics released by the Welsh Assembly Government today, showing that only 66% of children and 52% of adults have seen a dentist within the last two years, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Health, Peter Black AM, said:

"These statistics have failed to improve over the past few years. People are still having just as much of a problem finding NHS dentists as before."

"I am particularly concerned that only 66% of children are seeing dentists. It is important that children learn good oral health to prevent problems later in life."

"The new dental contracts have clearly not worked. The Welsh Liberal Democrats said at the time that it was not fit for purpose. The Government must now look again at ways of improving access to dentists for those within our communities."
