Massive drop in new home building prevents challenge to housing targets

12.00.00am GMT Wed 10th Dec 2008

Commenting on new figures released by Statistics for Wales that show the lowest level of new house building since 1984, Welsh Liberal Democrat Housing spokesperson, Peter Black said:

"We all knew that the economic slowdown would have a massive impact on the Government's ability to reach their target of 6,500 new affordable homes by 2011. This is further proof that they cannot rely on the private sector to build the houses for them."

"The Minister needs to rethink her approach. There are still other ways she could achieve her objectives but she must bring forward a fully thought out plan that looks at the target in the light of the new economic situation."
