Local Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member, Peter Black, has been thanked by members of his parties youth wing for his support in their recent campaign to stamp out homophobic bullying in schools.
The campaign, entitled 'Homophobia is gay' is a national campaign being run by Liberal Democrat Youth and Students, which is asking the government to provide funding to train teachers so as to enable them to deal with homophobia in the classroom. Training is already provided for teachers confronted with racism and sexism. The campaign aims to see a teacher in every school specially trained in dealing with homophobic bullying, as well as to ensure all homophobic taunts are challenged by staff.
"It was great to see such a high level of support for this campaign in the student community," said Mr. Black. "Homophobia is still present in schools as many children do not take the issue seriously and do not understand the affect they have on others, even through what they consider to be gentle teasing. Young people who are struggling to try and understand their identity and sexuality need appropriate support not abuse."
"The deliberately provocative title for this campaign is to try and raise awareness of this issue. Homophobia is as serious as sex or racism and must be as high on the governments list of priorities when it comes to dealing with bullying."
