The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black, has joined with the National Consumer Council (NCC) in calling for action to make the Wales and the UK better value in order to persuade holidaymakers to stay at home rather than fly abroad.

A new report from the NCC reveals that many people think Britain is becoming warmer and a better place to spend holidays. Around one in three (32%) say they are prepared to switch future holiday plans to avoid flying. But, in the face of high costs and inertia, only one in twenty five (4%) actually do so. The NCC's Chief Executive concludes that Britain has much to offer - from beautiful countryside to historic towns and cities, but, if costs are high and customer service is poor, then people will continue to fly abroad.

"Nagging at holidaymakers not to fly for the sake of the planet will have some effect, but if we are to make a real impact in reducing the number of short and medium haul flights we take, it can't be all stick and no carrot," said Mr. Black.

"That is why businesses need to do more. The rail companies could reduce their fares during school holidays, and the tourist industry could look again at their pricing structures. We have the highest rail fares in Europe and some of the most expensive hotels too."

"For instance, a couple living in London would spend £580.00 for a week in a 2 star hotel in Swansea and two return rail tickets in late August. Or they could spend an extra £26.00 and travel to Naples by plane, staying in a 3 star hotel. Until businesses can provide better value for money in order to make it more attractive to stay at home, many people will choose to continue to fly."
