The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black has challenged Welsh gas suppliers to follow the example of a Northern Ireland company, Firmus Energy, which has announced that it is to freeze its prices for domestic consumers for the next 12 months.
Mr. Black said:
"If Firmus Energy can give this kind of price guarantee to Northern Ireland families, then I fail to see why suppliers in the rest of the UK, including Wales, cannot follow suit.
"The usual tale the gas companies tell us is that the wholesale price of gas isn't falling quickly enough for them to be able to pass the benefit on to the consumer; though it always seems that wholesale price rises get passed on with eagerness.
"Either Firmus Energy buys its gas in a different market to the UK gas giants, their way of doing business is superior, or Great Britain's gas suppliers are not as keen to see the eye-watering profits they make shared out with their customers.
"This kind of action is particularly important given the financial pressures that many families are under, and the numbers of people who are in fuel poverty. Firmus Energy is to be commended for its action, and I hope it brings them many new customers.
"When will gas suppliers here in Wales and the rest of Great Britain to take up this challenge?"
