Assembly Member welcomes Morriston Hospital decision

July 6, 2010 12:00 AM

The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black has welcomed the news that the Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery at Morriston Hospital is to remain a regional centre of excellence for burns. The centre will continue to deal with adult patients from across Wales and the South West of England.

Mr. Black said:

"This is extremely good news, and should be seen as a clear tribute to the professionalism and skills of the staff team at the Centre.

"I am particularly pleased to hear that the Centre will continue to treat young people, and that the Health Board anticipates that only around five children a year will need to make the journey from Swansea to the specialist children's burns unit in Bristol.

"When people need specialist help, it makes sense to make use of first-rate provision whether it is here in Wales or across the border.

"Morriston Hospital, which is the only Grade One trauma hospital in Wales, is an outstanding hospital with a superb reputation. That is why having the Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery located at there is so important."
