Peter Black at the exhibition in Fforestfach
The Wales-wide campaign to encourage more people to coach and volunteer in sport at all levels is being backed by Welsh Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson and regional Assembly Member Peter Black
The starting gun has been fired on the Behind Every Star campaign, a Sport Wales drive to celebrate coaches and volunteers and encourage more people to get involved in their community.
Regardless of the sport, from grassroots or elite level, there needs to be dedicated coaches and volunteers if Wales is to prosper as a sporting nation.
Mr. Black who visited the Behind Every Star exhibition in Fforestfach Retail Park last Saturday said:
"This is a really important campaign for Wales. It shows how important the relationship between sportspeople and their coaches is, which is encouraging to people who want to get more involved in sport, but don't see themselves as a top sportswoman or man.
"Getting involved in sport is one of the best things that people can do. Apart form the obvious benefits for our physical health, sport helps people develop a positive mental attitude, and can help to bring communities together. Coaches and volunteers play a vital role in bringing that about.
"That is why I am delighted to back this campaign, and to urge people to get involved."
The campaign will last for several months and includes a photo exhibition of top Welsh sportspeople with one of their current or former coaches.
The exhibition will travel the country from May to October and includes stars such as British Lion Jamie Roberts, Paralympic swimmer Liz Johnson and world champion triathlete Helen Jenkins.
The public can register their interest in coaching and volunteering. Over the next few months they will be given information and put in contact with organisations, clubs and governing bodies in their local area.
Chair of Sport Wales, Professor Laura McAllister, said:
"We really appreciate the support to build on the excellent work that's already taking place in communities across Wales.
"The backing we've had for the campaign from local authorities, governing bodies, groups and individuals has been particularly impressive.
"It just goes to show the importance of coaches and volunteers to sport in Wales if we are to continue our proud sporting tradition and get even more children hooked and participating regularly."
