The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black has called on the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board to spell out what front-line health services are under threat after it was revealed that they need to claw back a £6 million overspend within a matter of months.
The Health Board is meeting in Swansea tomorrow when it will consider a report from its finance director spelling out overspends in general surgery, medicines, diagnostics and other areas adding up to £6 million. The report suggests that the Board 'faces considerable challenges' in turning the position around.
"This is a very disturbing report that indicates possible cuts to front line health services," said Mr. Black. "The Health Minister has already said that the new boards 'must live within their means' so it is unlikely that the Government will be rushing to help them.
"My concern is for the future of health care in the Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend areas. All public bodies are having to cut back their spending so as to balance their budgets and the health boards are no exception, however the decisions they take could well have implications for social service budgets of local councils as well as the length of time patients have to wait for essential operations.
"It is important that we have as much information as possible as soon as possible so that we can have a proper debate about any proposed cuts and any alternatives that may be available."
