Government needs to widen support for mental health sufferers

March 8, 2010 12:00 AM

Commenting on the announcement by the Health Minister to extend the pilot project to support armed services personnel experiencing mental health problems, Peter Black, Shadow Welsh Lib Dem Health Minister said:

"I am pleased that the Health Minister has extended this pilot to help returning services personnel and hopefully the government will widen its to support to people suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

"This disorder affects nearly a third of the population and yet not enough attention is given to it. PTSD can affect anyone and can take years to surface. It often manifests itself in substance abuse, addictive behaviour and family breakdown

"Last month, we called on the government to recognise the prevalence of PTSD in Wales and to identify ways of extending treatment provision to those in need."
