The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black has expressed his concern at quality of the facilities available at the paediatric ward in Morriston Hospital.
Mr. Black has called on the Chief Executive of the ABMU Health Board to clarify the future of this facility after it was moved from a purpose-built unit in Singleton due to a shortage of doctors last year. He said that he has had complaints from parents of children who attend the unit that the new accommodation does not meet the standard of the facilities that were available at Singleton Hospital.
"My understanding was that the health board's decision to transfer paediatric facilities to Morriston Hospital was a temporary measure to cover staff shortages but that this may well now become permanent," said Mr. Black. "This means that a purpose-built paediatric ward at Singleton will be going to waste.
"I believe that the Singleton Hospital facility cost £750,000 to build, and was designed specifically to deal with sick children. The new temporary location in Morriston Hospital cannot be described as purpose-designed by any stretch of the imagination.
"If the move to Morriston is to become permanent then the local health board must take steps to ensure that the department is located in facilities that are at least as good as the ones that were left behind at Singleton. Patients and staff deserve no less.
"I am currently seeking a meeting with the new Chief Executive of the ABMU Health Board and this is one of the issues I intend to raise with him."
