The Welsh Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson, Peter Black is urging people to get involved with the Blood Pressure Association's Know Your Numbers Week which aims to alert people to the benefits of getting their blood pressure checked.
Know Your Numbers Week 2009 organised by the Blood Pressure Association takes place this week from 7-13th September. Nearly 1,500 venues, known as Pressure Stations, will be offering free blood pressure checks at community and workplace venues nationwide. Participants include well-known high street, supermarket and independent pharmacies, major employers spanning construction, energy, retail and manufacturing, along with a wide range of NHS and public sector organisations.
Mr. Black said:-
"High blood pressure is a problem that affects around one in three of Welsh adults. Untreated, it can give rise to all sorts of serious health problems such as stroke, heart attack, as well as contributing to kidney disease and a particular type of dementia.
"However, once detected there are plenty of simple and effective things that people can do to get their blood pressure under control. That is why getting a check is so important, and there is no better time to do it than this week as part of Know Your Numbers Week.
"Just visit the Blood Pressure Association's website at http://www.bpassoc.org.uk, and follow the links to KYN 2009 to find your nearest Pressure Station."
