The Welsh Liberal Democrat Housing Spokesperson, Peter Black has expressed concern at the news that the taxpayer-owned banks had 6,700 repossessed properties on their books at the end of June, which is the last full month for which there are figures.
Mr. Black commented: -
"Having been bailed out by the taxpayer because of their own greed I am shocked that these bankers continue to operate without any sense of social responsibility. The fact that the banks concerned are effectively owned by taxpayers makes it worse.
"These taxpayer-owned banks should be seeking innovative ways of keeping people in their homes during this recession rather than simply trying to maximise their return.
"In addition, the government should give the courts more powers to order the banks and other lenders to assist those borrowers who fall behind with payments by exploring every avenue of help and advice that is open to them in a realistic manner and over a longer timeframe than at present.
"It wasn't the borrowers who made this mess, it was the bankers. That means they have to help to clear it up rather than counting on a free ride from the taxpayer."
