Junior doctor campaign deserves support says Assembly Member

August 11, 2009 12:00 AM

Welsh Liberal Democrat health spokesperson, Peter Black has expressed his support for the British Medical Association Cymru's (BMA) 'Option 7' campaign which is designed to improve the lives of junior doctors working in Wales.

Mr. Black said: -

"The BMA is quite right to launch this campaign. Patients in Welsh hospitals depend upon junior doctors, so anything that can improve their working conditions and help to stamp out bad practice is to be welcomed.

"However, complaining about matters like unsafe staffing levels, bullying, or a lack of training opportunities to the management that employs you can be risky; and some junior doctors will understandably be afraid of the negative consequences of doing so.

"That is why the 'Option 7' campaign and helpline set up by BMA Cymru is so important. This way, junior doctors can speak about their fears and concerns in confidence, and know that action will be taken without having to risk their careers and livelihoods in order to do so.

"I am very happy to support the campaign, and have added my name to the Facebook group that the BMA have established to back it up. I would urge any junior doctor who has concerns over any aspect of their working conditions to ring 0300 123 123 3, select option seven and report them."
