The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black has called on Labour and Plaid Cymru to take full responsibility for the cuts at Bridgend College that have seen A-Levels and 16 lecturing jobs axed.
Mr. Black was speaking as the full scale of funding cuts to the college became apparent. The Labour-Plaid Cymru Government chopped 7.5% off further education budgets earlier this year and only agreed to put more money in following vigorous protests by opposition Assembly Members, Lecturers and students.
However, there is still a serious funding shortfall, with Bridgend College being one of many who are having to find hundreds of thousands of pounds to balance their budget. The result is that courses and jobs are being cut and students left in the lurch.
"Labour and Plaid Cymru have voted down opposition motions calling for fair funding for colleges, they have ignored the warnings of College Principals about the implications of their decisions and they have failed to fairly distribute the extra money they did find," said Mr. Black. "In the light of this I find it quite hypocritical to see Labour AMs now lining up with students to fight these cuts as if they had nothing to do with them."
"If A-level courses are to be restored then the Government needs to find more money so as to ensure that colleges such as Bridgend are properly funded. At a time of recession we need to be investing in training and education not cutting it back. Surely Labour and Plaid Cymru understand that."
