AM welcomes back down on Community Health Councils

May 12, 2009 12:00 AM

Commenting on the statement by the Minister for Health, Edwina Hart regarding the future of Community Health Councils the Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Minister, Peter Black said:

"I welcome the change of view by the Minister that smaller, local community health councils should be allowed to continue to exist, though there will be a greater requirement on them to work together so as to effectively scrutinise the new Regional Health Boards. I argued strongly in my response to her consultation that there was a need to retain a more locally focussed scrutiny of the bigger health boards and that retaining Community Health Councils as presently constituted was the best way to do that. I am pleased that the Minister has listened."

"I do have concerns that the onus for change has been put on Community Health Councils with only a six month period to deliver but if there are clear targets and all parties know what is expected of them then that should be possible. I also want to see that innovation is encouraged and I am pleased that the Minister has said she will look at my suggestion as to how we might pump prime that."
