Commenting on the news that a 10 year old girl from Port Talbot received burns on 70% of her body at an unstaffed tanning salon, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Minister and Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black, said:
"There is now an urgent need to bring in regulation to prevent these sort of incidents. Unstaffed tanning salons cannot be allowed to continue. There is no point putting an age restriction on an activity if there is no supervision or anybody to stop underage people."
"Local authorities must be given the power to ensure these premises have licenses which should only be granted on the condition that they are staffed during 100% of their opening times. These staff should also be trained in health and safety advice so anyone who chooses to use a sun bed can seek professional advice first."
"Any salon allowing underage persons to use their facilities should face similar punishments to those selling alcohol or cigarettes to under-18s, including the possibility of losing their license and being closed down."
