Assembly Member backs call for occupational health service for GPs

April 29, 2009 12:00 AM

Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Minister, Peter Black, has backed the call by the British Medical Association for an occupational health service for GPs to be set up.

Mr. Black raised the issue in the National Assembly during questions to the Minister for Health. The BMA wants the service to be set up so as to provide support and counselling to General Practitioners as well as to comply with health and safety legislation.

The Ministers response was that a review is still being carried out and that she expects the BMA will come forward to engage in the process.

Peter Black said:

"The work of a GP can be very stressful and involves many different pressures and demands on their time and their health. They should have the same level of support and advice and any other employee in the workplace.

"Despite this there is no funding for such a service and only token support from Government. I am pleased that the Minister is prepared to look at this issue."
