New statistics show that the number of new houses started in October to December last year has dropped by 76%.
A total of 677 new properties were started between October and December last year compared to 2,827 in the same quarter last year. The vast majority of this drop is in the private housing sector which fell from 2,750 to 618 new starts.
One of the Governments main strategies for the creation of new affordable housing is the use of 'section 106' agreements, which force developers to build an affordable element to any new housing development. The drop off in house building means that there will be fewer affordable homes built.
Peter Black said:
"This is a massive blow for those who are campaigning to increase the amount of affordable housing in our communities. We all knew that house building was slowing but even I am surprised to see such a considerable drop."
"I have been asking the Minister for several months to bring forward a fully thought out plan on how the Labour-Plaid Government intends to meet their housing targets in light of the economic situation. The Government is refusing to budge from their position and every time these statistics are released we see how they are getting further from their goal."
