Commenting on the release of new statistics from the National Patient Safety Agency, which show that 59 patients died from 'incidents' in the Welsh NHS between April and September last year and a further forty were seriously injured each month, the Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Minister, Peter Black said:
"Nearly 60 deaths from 'incidents' within the Welsh NHS in six months is shocking, that equates to 10 every month. While the statistics do not show what caused the deaths of these patients, they do show that the highest percentages of reported incidents are from accidents. As recent information uncovered by the Welsh Liberal Democrats showed, there is a massive backlog in repairs to NHS buildings. The question has to be asked whether these deaths from accidents within the NHS avoidable?
"Patients in Wales need to be treated in safe and secure NHS departments. Although we accept that a lot of incidents cannot be avoided, many can, and there needs to be better management and control to reduce the number of accidents and deaths.
"Until the Labour-Plaid government makes serious inroads and ensures that all NHS premises meet basic health and safety standards and fire regulations then patients and staff will continue to be put at risk."
