Commenting on the fact that the number of people waiting more than four hours and eight hours for Accident and Emergency Treatment have risen, Peter Black, the Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Minister said:
"It is concerning to see another rise in the number of people that are having to wait for treatment. I appreciate that the winter is a busy period for A&E units, but this has always been the case and Trusts need to make preparations to accommodate this."
"The biggest concern is the impact these queues have on ambulance response times. It is often the case that ambulances are held up at hospitals for an hour or more to off-load their patients, meaning that they are unavailable to respond to other emergencies.
"The Government must look at introducing nurse-led walk-in centres to relieve the pressure on A&E by taking many of the less serious cases off of their hands. This would mean faster, more appropriate treatment for patients, less stress for our Doctors and Nurses and a faster turnaround for ambulances."
