The Welsh Liberal Democrats will today demand an explanation from the Labour-Plaid Government over why it has taken two years to bring forward their plans to help financial literacy.
The Government announced on Monday that they would bring forward consultation on a financial inclusion strategy but the consultation document seeks to deal with issues the Government has been supposedly working on since 2007.
Peter Black AM said: "It is a scandal that the government is taking so long to improve financial inclusion and literacy. The Welsh Lib Dems tabled a debate over a year ago when the Government promised to do exactly the things this new consultation sets out to look at.
"In November 2007 the Government "launched" a Financial Inclusion Framework Consultation, it contained five core themes that are almost exactly the same as the ones announced this week.
"At the time the consultation promised that a draft strategy document would be launched in the new year. Everyone presumed they meant the new year of 2008. What on earth have they been up to since then?"
Jenny Randerson AM added: "The Government must ask itself just how many people have been lost to a lifetime of financial problems in the time they have been dithering on this. This recession has resulted in people struggling, people losing their jobs and homes and thanks to WAG's inability to address the problem, many people have been left without the knowledge to manage their situations.
