The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black has given a cautious welcome to the news that British Gas is to reduce its charges to householders by 10% in the light of the plummeting price for wholesale gas.
Mr. Black said:
"Any decrease in gas prices has to be good news for hard-pressed householders trying to make ends meet in Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot and Bridgend.
"It will be particularly welcomed by pensioners and those on low incomes who are struggling with heating bills this winter. It is to be hoped that other gas companies in our region will quickly follow suit.
"However, there has to be more to come. Last July gas prices shot up by 35%, and we were told that this was necessary because the gas companies bought gas wholesale in advance and the price to them had risen.
"Now that wholesale prices are falling as swiftly as they rose, the gas companies must play fair with consumers by reducing household bills with the same speed as they increased them."
