South Wales West Assembly Member and Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Minister, Peter Black has called on the One Wales Government to honour their promise to keep a meaningful neurosurgery service at Swansea's Morriston Hospital.
Mr. Black was speaking after consultant neurosurgeons across South Wales cast doubt on the viability of the Health Minister's proposed solution of a single networked service on two sites. They have argued for a single neurosurgery unit situated in either Swansea or Cardiff.
"This letter reinforces my suspicion that the Health Minister has misrepresented the Steers Report into neurosurgery and opted for a political solution that will put the whole future of the service in doubt in the long term," said Mr. Black. "There is a danger that if the concerns of these consultants are not addressed then the service in both cities will wither on the vine and end up dealing with emergency operations only."
"I have argued from the beginning that there needs to be a single neurosurgical service and that Swansea is the logical place to site it. It has good communications links, is geographically central and together with the Bristol service will ensure that the whole of South Wales is within easy travelling distance of a service. Neurosurgery is an integral part of the trauma centre in Morriston and should stay there."
"In the light of this letter the Minister needs to rethink her approach and opt instead for a single, sustainable and clinically safe neurosurgical centre based in Swansea."
