Labour-Plaid Government to veto bid for powers over Welsh language

December 3, 2008 12:00 AM

As an opposition Assembly Member attempts to introduce legislation to establish a Welsh language Commissioner, Peter Black, Welsh Liberal Democrat Culture spokesperson has slammed the Labour-Plaid Government on their failure to bring powers on the Welsh language to the National Assembly 17 months after the First Minister made an announcement to devolve powers to Wales.

Peter Black AM said:

"It's an embarrassment for this Labour-Plaid Government that an opposition party has had to bring forward legislation on the Welsh language. Back in June 2007, the First Minster announced the Welsh Language power bid and here we are 17 months and two Plaid Cymru Heritage Ministers later we are still left without a formal bid for devolved powers. What is taking them so long?

"This is yet another failure of this Labour-Plaid Government to protect and promote the Welsh language.

Former Culture Minister Jenny Randerson AM said:

"The Labour-Plaid Government is missing a head start on protecting the Welsh language by failing to support an opposition member's power bid.

"I fear the Assembly Government's own legislation on the Welsh language will be stopped in its tracks in Westminster as clearly there are already difficulties at that end. This proposal that was put in front of us today would give us a head start for a possible devolution of full powers on the language from Westminster."
