The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black, has warned people to be careful to guard their personal data on sites such as Facebook for fear of falling prey to identity theft and fraud.
Mr. Black said:
"It seems there is a new scam out there whereby people are getting a message - supposedly from a friend - inviting them to look at a site which has recently-uploaded pictures of themselves.
"If you follow the link, you get asked for your name, your friend's name and your email address; then for a password, and then for where you heard of their site. Get through to the end, and you see a picture of a monkey and hear laughter.
"This may look like a harmless prank, but in fact the site operators are now in possession of a lot of personal information including your email, which can then be used for spamming. If you used the same password as you use for other things they could conceivably get access to your online banking facilities.
"We all need to be a lot more aware of guarding our private data on sites such as Facebook. The best way is to alter the privacy settings so as to show as little information to general enquirers as possible, and to be very careful who we allow as friends."
