Council must consult on closure of Troed-y-Ton says Assembly Member

October 14, 2008 12:00 AM

The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black has written to the Labour-run Bridgend Council asking them to carry out a full consultation regarding the proposed closure of Troed-Y-Ton Resource Centre.

Commenting on the proposed closure Mr Black said; "I'm extremely concerned that there appears to have been a lack of consultation on this closure. Residents have been presented with the news without having a chance to put their case.

"During the meeting in which the staff and residents were informed of this proposal, they were told that the Centre was an excellent and well-run home and that it has always worked within its budget. This would suggest that the decision has been made only on the grounds that the home is in a prime location. Many elderly residents are extremely upset and want the centre kept open.

"I have asked the Council to tell me their reasoning on this proposal along with details of consultation they have undertaken. It is important that everybody affected by this decision has a say and are listened to.

Notes:

BCBC are proposing to close Troed-y-Ton Resource Centre and allow a private company to build 30 self contained apartments.

Residents were given a letter from the Corporate Director of Wellbeing saying "over the next few weeks the Council will be discussing with you and your family timescales and the process of closure" This letter was dated 8.October 2008 six days before the cabinet decision due on 14 October 2008.
