Welsh Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Culture and Heritage, Peter Black AM, will today call on the Government to develop a marketing strategy to promote the historic environment in Wales to Tourists.
Mr Black will criticise the adverts run by Government agency 'Visit Wales', the Welsh Assembly Governments tourism arm, which feature slogans based around having 'good mud' and the ability to 'get lost' while featuring comparatively little about the historic environment in Wales.
It is estimated that 80% of the most visited attractions in Wales are historic sites. Wales has around 4,000 ancient monuments and 30,000 listed buildings.
"While one advert does feature a quick shot of a castle, there has to be a far bigger emphasis on the historic environment as a tourist attraction." said Mr Black. "Many of our most popular attractions are based around out history and we should be using this to attract more and more people to our country for holidays and trips."
"The credit crunch and increasing price of fuel means families will look for cheaper holiday options and there is no reason that Wales cannot benefit from this. To do so we need a coherent marketing strategy that shows just how varied and interesting our historic environment is."
