Young politician gets experience at the Welsh Assembly

Budding politicians at Swansea University are gaining experience of the world of politics by working as interns for local Assembly Members.
Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member, Peter Black has welcomed one intern from into his office in Cardiff Bay where she is helping out with constituency casework, research and press as well as capturing some of the atmosphere in the Senedd.
20 year-old Lisa Stephens, who is studying Politics, will be spending one day a week in Cardiff learning about the devolution process and the role of Assembly Members. The scheme also teaches the Students involved about the day to day workings of an office, teaching skills that many later use in full time employment. A previous graduate of the same internship programme now works full time in Peter Black's office.
"This programme is a great opportunity for the students involved and also a way for politicians in Wales to engage with young adults, and nurture their interest in politics." said Mr Black. "We often hear how young people are disinterested in politics and turnout at elections reflects this. This scheme is a good way of encouraging those who are interested to become further involved in Welsh politics."
Lisa Stephens added: "The internship programme is a very rewarding experience. It allows students the chance to experience first-hand what working in a political institution entails. This is an exciting alternative to writing a dissertation which is not offered anywhere else. I feel privileged to have had access to this opportunity."
