Black comments on new child poverty statistics

September 30, 2008 12:00 AM

Welsh Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Social Justice, Peter Black AM, has commented on the figures released by the Campaign to End Child Poverty which have revealed that there are 297,000 children living in 'low wage' families in Wales.

Mr Black said:

"The Welsh Assembly Government's promise to half child poverty by 2010 lies in tatters. There can now be no way that they can claim any success in this battle. In one part of my region 58% of all children live in low income households."

"The Government have spoken so many warm words but failed to take any of the action required to help ordinary working families."

"The Liberal Democrats would help families living in poverty by lowering taxes on those who earn the least and raising the personal threshold for tax, taking thousands of the poorest households out of taxation all together. This would be paid for by taxing those who can afford it the most and those who pollute the most."
