The Welsh Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Social Justice, Peter Black has hit out at the Labour government's plans for keeping car number plate data for five years.
The data is to be collected by a series of roadside cameras which aim to capture 50 million number plates a day when they go live in four months. The numbers will then be kept on a database for five years to enable journeys to be traced.
Mr. Black said
"As usual, Labour claim that this is to help catch criminals. Yet the CCTV User group confirms that such data is presently stored for 31 days and that there is 'not a great deal of logic to explain keeping the same images for five years."
"This is typical of Labour's Big Brother approach. When the government was asked how long the data would be kept, they initially said two years. This was untrue. A Freedom of Information request revealed that data will in fact be kept for five years."
"How exactly will this help to catch criminals? Organised gangs will use different vehicles or other means of transport. It will be ordinary people who will have their every move subject to scrutiny by the authorities. Labour is attempting to build a surveillance society by stealth."
