Parts of Swansea are still amongst the poorest parts of Wales says AM

July 10, 2008 12:00 AM

Swansea based Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member, Peter Black, has claimed that the Government are not doing enough to help our poorest communities after new statistics ranked parts of Swansea as some of the most deprived in Wales.

The Assembly Government's Index of Multiple Deprivation ranks communities on several indicators of deprivation, including income, employment and health. The Overall Index of Multiple Deprivation has five areas of Swansea listed in the twenty most deprived areas. These include North Townhill, Brynmelyn and Dyfatty Portmead, Waun Wen and Mayhill. Parts of Mynyddbach, Bonymaen, Morriston and Sketty are also ranked in the 10% most deprived parts of Wales. The Brynmelyn and Dyfatty area was also ranked the most income deprived part of Wales and the 2nd most employment deprived.

"These statistics are further proof that not enough is being done by the Westminster Government and the Welsh Assembly Government to help the poorest in our society," said Mr. Black. "The Assembly Government has trumpeted their flagship Communities First scheme for seven years now and it is clear that in many areas it is just not working. There are no clear targets and no way of measuring if the millions of pounds spent on this scheme are making a difference or not."

"The credit crunch and economic slump will also have had an impact as will the huge increase in fuel prices. The Assembly Government is failing to hit its targets on fuel poverty and child poverty. Labour's dismal record is summed up by this latest report."

"There are no easy quick fix solutions, but the Welsh Liberal Democrats are continuing to campaign for changes that will add up to a considerable difference in our communities. These include income tax and council tax reform, changes to the tax credits system and improvements in our education system. These measures are the key to fighting poverty in Wales."

The five most deprived areas of Swansea are the Lower Level Super Output Areas Townhill 1, Castle 2, Penderry 1, Castle 1 and Townhill 3. These equate roughly to the communities of North Townhill, Brynmelyn and Dyfatty, Portmead, Waun Wen and Mayhill.
