Assembly Member welcomes drop in road casualties

June 26, 2008 12:00 AM

The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black, has welcomed the fall in deaths and injuries on Swansea's roads in 2007.

The statistics released by the government show that 1,074 people were killed or injured in road accidents in Swansea in 2007, down from 1,262 the year before. Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend also recorded slight falls in their statistics.

"Although these numbers are still too high I am pleased to see that action taken by Swansea Council is having an effect on the safety of those living and working in Swansea," said Mr. Black. "The Council has invested a significant amount of money in 20mph zones around local schools, as well as improvements elsewhere and road safety lessons in schools.

"There was also a significant reduction in the number of children killed on our roads from ten to five, though that is still five too many. We must continue to work together to get that figure down to zero."
