The Welsh Liberal Democrat spokesperson on housing, Peter Black, has called for urgent Assembly Government action to combat the rising tide of repossessions in Wales.
Mr. Black was speaking in the light of recent figures from housing charity Shelter Cymru which shows that repossessions in Wales are up by 56%. The charity has pointed out that action is being taken to provide greater legal advice for households at risk of repossession in England, and has called for similar arrangements in Wales.
Mr. Black said:
"Wales already suffers from an excess of poor-quality housing, and from too little affordable housing being available for rental or purchase. Too many of our fellow-citizens are in temporary housing and rising repossessions can only add to this sad and unnecessary situation.
"Labour and their Plaid helpers in Cardiff must take strong action now. The Assembly Government must support changes in court protocols that insist that lenders and borrowers must have discussed debt advice and re-scheduling payments before repossession is granted.
"Shelter Cymru's figures show that repossessions are rising faster in Wales than elsewhere in the UK. Labour and Plaid need to stop dithering and take action. Better and timelier debt advice and a mortgage rescue scheme are needed now to try and stem that rise."
