Government must create one-stop shop service for identity theft victims says AM

March 11, 2008 12:00 AM

The Welsh Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Social Justice, Peter Black, is backing calls from the National Consumer Council and from the Crosby report on national ID schemes for a one-stop service for people who are the victims of identity theft.

Mr. Black said:

"No-one can deny that identity theft is a growing problem in Wales and the whole of the UK.

"People who have been victimised in this way have been left to sort it out on their own for too long despite the best efforts of organisations like the NCC and the three credit reference agencies to plug the gap with their own scheme.

"However, this doesn't go far enough, and the Labour Government need to move quickly to make sure that we have an easily-accessible support service that operates across both the public and private sectors.

"Given the abysmal record of this government in keeping our personal details safe, identity theft is likely to grow yet further. Government should stop being part of the problem and begin to contribute towards the solution."
