Assembly Member hits out at Revenue and Customs job cuts

February 29, 2008 12:00 AM

A Labour government decision to cut up to 850 jobs from HM Revenue and Customs over the next three years has been roundly criticised by Welsh Liberal Democrat Social Justice spokesperson, Peter Black.

He is particularly concerned at the closure of the Swansea Pierhead in the region he represents.

Mr. Black said:

"I do not understand the reasoning behind Labour's cuts. At a time when we are seeking to combat the influx of drugs and other smuggled goods into Wales, shutting offices such as Swansea Pierhead makes no sense.

"It is likely that the Swansea-Cork ferry will be re-introduced at sometime in the near future, and Swansea is making strenuous attempts to attract more cruise ships to use the harbour. Having a part-time customs presence in the port is putting out the welcome mat for smugglers.

"Looking at the national picture, Wales has miles of lonely coast with secluded beaches and creeks. If the Welsh Customs presence is to be reduced, how does Labour suggest these are effectively patrolled?

"In addition, many of the offices where the job cuts are planned are in less well-off areas of Wales. How can the government justify putting over a billion pounds into these communities through European Convergence funding with one hand and then axing much needed jobs with the other. This is madness."
