ID Cards debate puts Plaid in the spotlight

January 16, 2008 12:00 AM

Plaid Cymru will be put on the spot this afternoon - to see whether they have flip flopped on their opposition to ID Cards. The One Wales Agreement is silent on the issue.

A Welsh Liberal Democrat debate in the siambr will call on AMs to re-iterate their opposition to the use of ID cards to access services in Wales. In 2005, a similar vote was supported by the Conservatives and Plaid Cymru. Labour abstained.

Social justice spokesperson Peter Black said: "The Welsh Liberal Democrats are clear in our opposition to identity cards. Compulsory identity cards are unnecessary and intrusive. The Liberal Democrats have always opposed the idea, believing that it will be a potentially dangerous infringement of individual liberty.

"The motion we have tabled is the strongest measure that this Assembly can enact within its current powers to oppose the imposition of identity cards to access public services in Wales.

"We believe that the Assembly should use the powers that were granted in the Identity Cards Act to ensure that ID cards are not required to access public services in Wales (those under the jurisdiction of the Assembly anyway). It is vital that we continue to provide services to people on the basis of need and not whether someone has a particular piece of paper in their pocket. The Assembly should stand firm on its previous commitment and send a strong message to Westminster that ID cards are not welcome in a supposedly liberal society."

Notes:

Welsh Liberal Democrats have consistently opposed the introduction of ID cards.

Motion for debate on Wednesday

The National Assembly for Wales:

1 Notes that on 7th June 2005, the National Assembly for Wales voted to "direct the Government not to allow ID cards to be used as a requirement for access to public services in Wales which are within the remit of the Assembly."

2 Calls on the current Assembly Government to maintain this policy.

There are two amendments from the Conservatives - Welsh Liberal Democrats will be supporting both amendments.
