The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black has congratulated Swansea Council on the way that they have turned the City Centre around over the last three and a half years.

Mr. Black was speaking in light of today?s announcement that Hammerson PLC and Urban Splash ? 2 of Europe?s leading developers, will be leading a major new city centre and seafront development. The development takes in parts of the current St. David?s centre, Parc Tawe, the Quadrant, Paxton Street and County Hall car park and will include ?1 Billion worth of new developments comprising up to 1,000 new residential units, 600,000 square feet of additional retail space and new leisure, office, hotel and conference facilities.

?The transformation of the City Centre over the last few years has been remarkable,? said Mr. Black. ?Not only do we have the imminent re-opening of a major new Leisure Centre facility, but work is also on-going on the former David Evans? site in bringing new retail units to the area for the first time in decades. New developments have taken place in Wind Street and the Marina and work is on-going in giving the City Centre a major facelift.?

?In addition there has been a big investment in public transport provision with infrastructure works that will ease the flow of traffic through Swansea when they are finished and the imminent start on a new bus station in a few weeks time. Finally, I look forward to the ?22 million development by Swansea Housing Association in Swansea High Street that will transform that area as well.?

?Wherever I go in Wales people tell me how well Swansea is doing. They have noticed the transformation of the City. The evidence is there for everybody to see in the form of building work and new investment that the Council is in the process of turning Swansea into an up-and-coming European City of note.?
