School buildings must be top of the agenda

Whatever the outcome of the current talks as to who will form a majority government in Cardiff Bay it is my view that one of the top priorities of that administration should be to take action on the condition of school buildings around Wales

When I challenged the Minister on this issue recently he referred to a grant issued four years ago to local Councils, which although not yet all spent, has been committed already to projects by many local authorities and is wholly inadequate to meet the cost of the work facing them.

A £749m gap between available resources and required funding was identified last July. Even then it is considered to be an under-estimate by many Councils.

At least the Minister's predecessor acknowledged that there was a problem. The Government now appear to be in denial. It is right that some schemes for which there is funding have not yet come to fruition, including Pen-y-Fai, but they will be built and hopefully soon. What's needed now is more money and a more effective partnership between the Government and local Councils so that we can at least have a definite timetable to resolve this issue once and for all.
