The Welsh Liberal Democrat Social Justice spokesperson, Peter Black, has questioned whether the public will see any benefits from the £430m cost of cutting civil servants' jobs. Liberal Democrat research has revealed the cost of job cuts to date, which includes a payment of £612,000 to one top civil servant.
Mr. Black said:
"Labour has thrown nearly half a billion pounds of taxpayers' money at civil servants to pay them not to work. Yet the promised benefits are vague and stretch far into the future.
"No business that ran a redundancy programme this way would last ten minutes.
"Labour likes to pretend that these cuts are only of jobs that are no longer needed, and that the public will not be affected. That is not the case.
"Already we are in a situation whereby there is no permanent customs presence in places like Swansea and in West Wales. Yet drugs are coming ashore in large quantities with 65 pounds of cocaine being washed up in Gwynedd earlier this month.
"In addition Revenue and Customs management are to make further announcements about 'staffing forecasts' in centres throughout Wales later this week. At a time when Labour are placing great emphasis on detecting fraud, cutting staff makes no sense when they could be employed on fraud detection work."
