The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black, has pledged his support for a new Construction College to be sited in Port Talbot.
Neath Port Talbot College are developing a proposal for a new National Institute for Construction - Wales (NICW) to be built in Port Talbot. National Construction Colleges are located in every other country of the United Kingdom. The college is working with Neath Port Talbot Council on the proposal and the preferred site is the old docks behind the railway station in Port Talbot. The College would be funded by European Convergence Funding, as well as money from Neath Port Talbot College and private investment. However there are approximately six other education providers in Wales who are preparing a similar proposal.
"When I was Chair of the Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills committee I regularly stated the need for high quality vocational training." said Mr Black. "This development would allow for such provision. The South Wales area is currently experiencing a rise in new developments, such as the Swansea SA1 development, and new building developments are being created in the region. A new construction college would bring vital skills to the region and allow us to ensure that our economic development is not hampered by a lack of skilled contractors."
"This is also a fantastic opportunity to add to the economy of Port Talbot. A college would bring economic and cultural benefits to our area. As we have seen in Swansea, employers will often be attracted to areas where they know the skills exist. The development will bring short term, as well as longer term economic benefits for the town. I fully support this proposal and I hope that the government looks favourably upon Neath Port Talbot College's bid."
