The recent announcement by Labour's Work and Pensions Secretary Peter Hain of a new disability test designed to get 20,000 disabled people back to work runs the risk of increasing child poverty according to Welsh Liberal Democrat Social Justice Spokesperson, Peter Black.
"According to Government sources, Mr Hain's new test may end up failing half of those taking it," said Mr. Black. "Like the Child Poverty Action Group, I am extremely worried that the test may therefore be too strict."
"Failing the new test will mean losing benefit. For those thousands of children whose parents are disabled, this may well have the effect of plunging their families into poverty. Such an outcome will not assist in achieving Labour's own target of halving child poverty by 2010, and would be particularly damaging here in Wales.
"Labour would do better to take up the suggestions of the CPAG and target funding on helping people with disabilities back into work as well as breaking down employer prejudice. Labour's present approach is all stick and no carrot."
