The decision by Lloyds TSB to withdraw financial support from the National Eisteddfod in favour of the London Olympics could set the trend for other private sponsors of Welsh national events, arts and sporting projects, the Welsh Liberal Democrat Culture Spokesperson, Peter Black, has warned.
His comments come after the announcement by Lloyds TSB that they had decided not to sponsor the Gymanfa Ganu at future National Eisteddfods due to their financial commitment to the 2012 London Olympics. The bank has supported the event for the last 25 years. This deal that was worth £8,500 last year. The organizers of the event do not yet know where replacement funding will come from.
"While this decision is in itself disappointing, I am also worried about the possibility of this becoming increasingly common in the run up to the Olympics." said Mr Black. "We already knew that the London Olympics would have a huge impact on lottery funding for voluntary organizations in Wales, but I did not anticipate that it would have a similar effect with regards to private sponsorship for Welsh national events such as the Eisteddfod."
"The concern now must be that other private sponsors will follow suit and that in particular the £6 million shortfall in private sponsorship for the Wales Millennium Centre will not be met. We need some assurances from the Assembly Government on this issue particularly as there is a danger that in some instances the Welsh taxpayer will be left to make up any shortfall."
