Welsh Lib Dems call for trains not planes

October 23, 2007 12:00 AM

Nick TregoningWelsh Lib Dems have called for a clear signal from the Assembly Government that they are serious about sustainable development. The air-link, from Cardiff to Anglesey, is receiving around £3.6m of Assembly Government funding in subsidy over a period of 3 years.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats believe that this money would be better spent on more sustainable and more environmentally-friendly forms of public transport.

Dunvant Councillor and Gower Assembly spokesperson Nick Tregoning said:

"The Labour Plaid Assembly Government should scrap the subsidy for the North South air-link. This would be a clear signal that they are taking sustainable development seriously.

"The money should be used to improve bus and rail services for all rather than fund an 18 seat air service for relatively few people.

"Welsh Lib Dems want to invest in providing a first rate public transport service that can serve the whole of Wales, linking all regions."
