Nick at Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr
Welsh Liberal Democrats in Swansea are demanding that a proposal by Labour in Westminster to take away cash reserves that English schools have built up should not be introduced in Wales.
Labour has put out for consultation a proposal to siphon off 5% of the cash held in reserve in school budgets. Many schools build up reserves to invest in new equipment or as cover for a rainy day. Former Deputy Cabinet Member for Education and Dunvant Councillor Nick Tregoning said:
"Frankly, I am amazed Labour can even think of doing this. Taking money from school budgets in this way is little more than a smash and grab on careful schools that have planned for the future.
"The danger is that Welsh Labour, with their Plaid helpers, will seek to do the same here in Wales.
"Labour claim the money will be given back to councils to spend on education. My fear is that all they want to do is claim they are spending lots of new money on education when the reality is that they will cynically spend the same money twice.
"Labour and Plaid must discover some backbone and resist this smash and grab. Money built up by Swansea schools should stay with Swansea schools for the benefit of our children."
