Dunvant Councillors John Newbury and Nick Tregoning today welcomed the latest steps in improving road safety in Dunvant. They were speaking after the announcement by Cabinet Member John Hague that the latest school to benefit from the Swansea Administration's recent vow to have 20 mph zones around all Swansea's schools is to be Dunvant Primary. John Newbury said:
"This represents an important step in the ongoing campaign to improve road safety in Dunvant. The idea of a 20 mph zone in the area was first put forward by Dunvant Infant school governors in 2002, and was fully supported by Nick and I at the time.
"Pressure has been kept up throughout the last five years by all concerned, including the Governors of the new Dunvant Primary, and most recently by over 400 petitioners. Thanks to the Administration's commitment to 20 mph zones, we have now achieved this important milestone".
Nick Tregoning added:
"Other measures have been agreed, including the installation of speed indicators on Dunvant Road and Killan Road near to the sites of accidents, one sadly fatal, extending double yellow lines at the difficult Broadmead/Dunvant Road junction, and road markings on Derlwyn.
"All these measures are welcome, but more remains to be done. That is why John and I have put forward a further scheme to the Assembly and to the Council for Dunvant to be used as a pilot for the first psychological traffic-calming scheme in Wales."
