The Welsh Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Communities, Housing and Social Justice, Peter Black, has called for more to be done to tackle homelessness after the release of new statistics today by the Welsh Assembly Government.
The statistics show an overall drop in the number of households being classed as homeless, with 2,359 households in this category in the months of April to June. However, only 1,604 of these households are rated as 'Eligible, unintentionally homeless and in priority need' which entitles them to the most support. 15% of households in Bed and Breakfast accommodation were families with children.
"I am pleased to see an overall drop in homelessness. However, these statistics show that there is still a long way to go," said Mr. Black. 1,604 households may have been accepted as a priority need, but 755 households were either counted as homeless and not in priority need or as intentionally homeless, giving them less or even no support in getting re-housed."
"There are also still too many families with children living in bed and breakfast accommodation. The ideal number is zero. Children need stability in their lives and a B&B is not going to be able to provide this. Better investment in prevention is the key to reducing these figures further but we also need to ensure that funding is available to enable Councils to construct an adequate safety net, including temporary accommodation and support."
