The Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Communities, Housing and Social Justice, Peter Black, is demanding that the Labour-Plaid Cymru Government in Cardiff come clean now over which Welsh Post Offices they plan to shut.
Mr. Black's call follows the news that the Post Office in England is announcing details of the first 180 offices - in Kent, the East Midlands, and East Yorkshire - out of the 2500 that Labour plans to cull throughout the whole of the UK, including Wales, by December 2008.
Mr Black said:
"This Labour-Plaid Cymru Government needs to come clean over which Welsh Post Offices they plan to get rid of. Now that the announcements have begun over the border, the level of anxiety felt by postmasters and postmistresses, not to mention the communities that rely upon the post offices they run, will be acute. Announcements in Wales are due to drag on from January to July next year. That isn't good enough.
"The great pity of all this is that it isn't necessary. If Labour and their Plaid Cymru allies were prepared to swallow their pride and implement Welsh Lib Dem plans, we could save and expand the network, rather than emasculate it.
"Lib Dem proposals include a £2 billion fund to invest in Post Office branches; opening new branches where there is a need; retaining Post Office Card Accounts for benefits and pension payments; freeing the Post Office from Royal Mail restrictions; and letting it develop new business. We would also have a new legal requirement for government in both Westminster and Cardiff to maintain the local Post Office network."
