The Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Social Justice, Housing and Communities, Peter Black, has supported the TUC's recent call for Labour Ministers to do more to meet their self-imposed target of ending child poverty in the UK by 2020.
Mr Black said:
"The TUC report makes sober reading. Child poverty costs the UK £38bn each year through poor health, reduced economic output, and increased crime."
"While there has been a welcome decrease of 600,000 in the numbers of children living in poverty since 1997 - for which Labour is to be commended - figures form the Office of National Statistics (ONS) show that inequality is rising once more. That is the challenge to this government."
"Welsh Liberal Democrats take the eradication of child poverty seriously. That is why we are happy to support the TUC's call for Labour to close tax loopholes and curb excessive City bonuses. It is also why we propose measures like increasing child benefit by up to £5.00 per week per family, and reforming child support arrangements so that help actually reaches the poorest families."
