The Conservative Quality of Life group has said that taxes on UK short-haul flights and 'gas-guzzling' cars are needed to combat climate change. David Cameron must now decide which bits of the 'blueprint for a green revolution' becomes policy. The recommendations mean all six of the policy reviews commissioned by the Tory leader have now reported. Dunvant Lib Dem councillors Nick Tregoning and John Newbury commented:
"John Redwood, the Tory who gave Welsh money back to Westminster, wants more roads, runways and growth, while John Gummer proclaims a 'significant moratorium' on roads and airport expansion," said Nick Tregoning. "Even David Cameron's circus skills will be tested by trying to ride these two horses in opposite directions. These plans do not add up to an 80% cut in carbon emissions by 2050, as they claim. There is no clear table showing how the proposed policies will cut carbon."
John Newbury added: "Mr Redwood has already dealt the knock-out blow to any significant green transport policy. The strong statements being spun by the Conservatives do not reflect the actual document. For example, on high speed rail, the report offers no method of funding."
