Earlier this week, Dunvant's Welsh Lib Dem Councillors Nick Tregoning and John Newbury were reminding people not to miss the 21st September deadline for putting in a claim for the winter fuel payment. Now they are demanding that Gordon Brown's Labour Party put the level of the benefit up.
"Throughout the UK, it is estimated that over two million pensioners live in fuel poverty - which means that they pay 10% or more of their average income on fuel, said John Newbury. "If Labour is serious about combatting poverty, then they will use the opportunity of their autumn spending review to commit to making a substantial increase in the winter fuel payment."
"In the last four years, fuel bills have gone up by 57% on average, but Labour has deliberately kept the winter fuel payment at the same level," added Nick Tregoning. "If they are really mean to eliminate fuel poverty by 2016 as they have promised, then they will increase that payment now."
